The Experimental Art School was established by the artist Poul Gernes and the art historian Troels Andersen in 1961 in Copenhagen as an alternative to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Based on the students’ and teachers’ revolutionary working community, The Ex-school developed into the most important Danish artist group in the 1960s and became crucial in its time and for future generations of artists. The school experimented with painting, prints and sculpture, and made a name for itself in the public with happenings, films, publications and installation art.
Museum Jorn pays tribute to this important period in Danish art with a compressed presentation of works from some of the school’s most important representatives: Per Kirkeby, Peter Louis-Jensen, Poul Gernes and John Davidsen.
