Daner Gallery 1972-1977
A unique look into the engine room of the experimental art scene of the 1970s
With this exhibition, Museum Jorn tells the story of bank clerk, art collector and gallerist John Hunov’s Daner Galleriet, which in the years 1972-77 presented a total of 40 exhibitions with a number of Danish and international artists, who later turned out to be some of the most influential of the period. The gallery was not commercial, and therefore functioned as a project space for the artists, who showed everything from photographs, paintings, objects, performances to a gallery operetta at their exhibitions.
In addition to original works, the exhibition at Museum Jorn also shows a large number of archival material such as posters, correspondence and photos – this is done in an attempt to recreate as much as possible of the 40 exhibitions, to give an insight into both the history of the gallery, and not least in the experimental art scene of the 1970s.
In 2020, Museum Jorn was given the opportunity to acquire large parts of John Hunov’s archives, and earlier this year the museum received a generous donation from the Hunov family, which, together with a number of loans from private collectors has made it possible to carry out the exhibition.
