Museums-Sprints
From 2000 until 2001, the German conceptual artist Florian Slotawa roduced a total of nine videos, in which he – while running – attempts to finish his visits to art museums in record time
In his work, the German conceptual artist Florian Slotawa (b.1972) often adds humorous twists to objects or everyday situations related to art history. Some of Slotawa’s most striking artistic creations are imitations of sculptures by well-known artists, recreated using materials from DIY stores. His ironic deconstructions of the art world and its challenging mechanisms mirror the absurd confrontations which sometimes occur between viewers and art.
From 2000 until 2001, the German conceptual artist Florian Slotawa roduced a total of nine videos, in which he – while running – attempts to finish his visits to art museums in record time. His museum ‘runs’ are concrete manifestations of how much of the art shown in museum exhibitions visitors actually take in. What is the value of many works seen over a short space of time to visitors? To which extent can viewers actually cope with selecting and deselecting the options for immersion offered? Is an introductory scanning at high speed necessary in order to optimise the visit? How slowly could it be done?
Museum Jorn shows Slotawa’s Museums-Sprints in the autumn of 2022 on a giant screen at the main entrance – in preparation of the museum visit. The videos invite visitors to critically reflect on their own ideas of experiencing the art and accept some of the responsibility for getting a quality museum experience.
