Museum Jorn marks the 100th birthday of the Danish artist Poul Gernes with a presentation of significant Gernes works from the collection.
The artist, Poul Gernes (1925-1996), is one of the most prominent representatives of the Danish 1960s avant-garde. His radical minimalist-graphic expression, characterized by geometric shapes and striped color combinations, has achieved iconic status in Danish art.
Gernes is known, among other things, for his colorful decorations of the Palads cinema in Copenhagen and Herlev Hospital. In 1961, together with the art historian Troels Andersen, he founded the Experimental Art School (Eks-skolen), which functioned as an anti-academic collective, where students and teachers worked together and side by side.
Museum Jorn marks the 100th birthday of Poul Gernes with a presentation of significant Gernes works from the collection. The exhibition includes early experiments with sculpture and graphics, alternative drafts of the EC flag, a layered cake made of plaster, a ceiling lamp, stripe and letter images and a lot of colored stripes and circles. The presentation sheds light on the materials, forms, and colors that make up the universe of a legendary artist.
