GRETE BALLE

Museum Jorn shines light on one of the most innovative figures in Danish and international art.

People often say that something is “of its time,” but the woven works created by artist Grete Balle (b. 1926) in the 1960s and 1970s are quite the opposite. Balle’s weavings were far ahead of their time in terms of materials, technique, and expression. Using coarse fibres, unconventional materials, and striking textures, she challenged the flat surface of weaving and transformed it into a sensory, spatial fiels that remains both surprising and highly relevant today.

At a time when textiles have once again gained a prominent place – as a medium in everyday culture and craft, as well as in contemporary art and research – it is particularly meaningful to highlight an artist who was among the pioneers in expanding the boundaries of textile art. Not only within a Danish context, but indeed also internationally.

GRETE BALLE – Threads of Time presents a focused selection of Balle’s works, with particular emphasis on her avant-garde weavings from the 1960s and 1970s. Realised in close collaboration with Grete Balle and Fuglsang Kunstmuseum, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on her artistic practice while celebrating more than 75 years of creative work and marking her 100^th birthday.
